Purpose of the course
This Live Learning Mini Course examines how anxiety rises in all of us, and what we can do to lower its volume in our mind.
The pandemic has heightened, in all of us, a natural tendency toward self-protection. No matter how sophisticated we are compared to the old world, we still have the same architectural brain as did the Athenians during the plague. What is more, the new brain—which is referred to as the executive functioning lobe (or thinking brain), affords us the ability to give meaning to things and craft symbolic mental and verbal representation of our environment and ourselves. And it is also this part that has us observing ourselves thinking about our thinking. Hence, as the brain does its job in alerting us to a possible threat, this other region of our brain takes it and runs wild with all sorts of imagined catastrophic events. In our time together, we will look at ways to manage to live with a human brain when we become overwhelmed by our inner experiences in our efforts to cope with difficult external conditions.
