The Power of Presence

In today’s fast-paced world, leaders are constantly pulled in multiple directions—balancing strategic priorities, managing teams, and responding to ever-changing demands. Yet, one of the most powerful leadership skills is the ability to be fully present. Focused attention isn’t just about avoiding distractions; it’s about deep listening, intentional engagement, and creating meaningful connections. When leaders cultivate presence, they foster trust, enhance decision-making, and inspire those around them. This month, we explore how mastering focused attention can transform leadership impact and drive lasting success.

The Power of Presence: How Attention Shapes  Your Integrity

WRITTEN BY DR. MIRELLA DE CIVITA

In a world that never stops demanding our attention, our ability to focus on what truly matters is one of our most valuable yet underutilized resources (Brown, 2022). Every day we are bombarded with information, responsibilities, and expectations, pulling us in countless directions. But what if the key to personal fulfillment and integrity lies in something as simple—and as challenging—as paying attention?

Integrity isn’t just about honesty; it’s about alignment between who we are and who we want to be. That alignment requires presence. Often, we are stuck in the past, reliving mistakes, or consumed by anxieties about the future. But true integrity asks us to live in the here and now, making conscious choices that reflect our deepest values.

Quick Take Question:

What’s your secret to remaining fully present and engaged during critical conversations, even amidst competing priorities?

Eddie Turner-

What's your secret to remaining fully present and engaged during critical conversations even amidst competing priorities?
I was trained under the great Marcia Reynolds. Dr. Reynolds often says, "as coaches we must master the ability to catch and release." That is one key concept that I've taken from her training that I utilize to remain present with clients.
Obviously, things will occur during a coaching session and our minds may drift, a thought may pop up,  we’re distracted momentarily because of something in the environment... Whatever it may be
But Marcia's wisdom in saying, "catch and release,”  is what I remind myself of so when those moments inevitably occur. I catch it, realize what's occurring, release it,  let It go, recenter myself so that I may remain fully present with my client.
Now,  that’s during the coaching session, certainly before going into the coaching session, there are some centering exercises that I do. There's some  things in terms of breathing, meditation, reflection, and  certainly even afterwards, but definitely those are perhaps the two most important aspects I would say that help me to remain present and fully engaged during critical conversations.
