Eddie Turner-
What's your secret to remaining fully present and engaged during critical conversations even amidst competing priorities?
I was trained under the great
Marcia Reynolds. Dr. Reynolds often says, "as coaches we must master the ability to catch and release." That is one key concept that I've taken from her training that I utilize to remain present with clients.
Obviously, things will occur during a coaching session and our minds may drift, a thought may pop up, we’re distracted momentarily because of something in the environment... Whatever it may be…
But Marcia's wisdom in saying, "catch and release,” is what I remind myself of so when those moments inevitably occur. I catch it, realize what's occurring, release it, let It go, recenter myself so that I may remain fully present with my client.
Now, that’s during the coaching session, certainly before going into the coaching session, there are some centering exercises that I do. There's some things in terms of breathing, meditation, reflection, and certainly even afterwards, but definitely those are perhaps the two most important aspects I would say that help me to remain present and fully engaged during critical conversations.
